Born in Boulder, Colorado, Boston based violist Foxman James has a passion for expanding and combining artistic genres. From performing in jazz big bands and combos to recording with heavy metal bands and collaborating with visual artists and poets from across the country, Foxman seeks to expand the expectation of what it means to be a classically trained musician. With a special interest in Baroque repertoire, she is particularly known for her interpretation of Bach’s solo works for cello and violin. In addition to solo performances, Foxman regularly plays with the East Coast Scoring Orchestra and the New England Philharmonic, and has performed with such groups as the Boston Opera Collaborative and Boston New Music Initiative. A devoted animal lover, Foxman is also the founder of Artists for Animal Adoption, a collaboration of young Boston musicians raising awareness and support for local animal shelters.
Now a senior faculty member of the Boston School of Music Arts, Foxman did her undergraduate studies at Lawrence University with violist Matthew Michelic and holds a M.M. from the Boston Conservatory where she studied with Rictor Noren. In 2014, she published her own violin method book with hand-painted illustrations, designed to engage the imaginations of students and share her passion with the next generation of young musicians.
