I never planned to be a routesetter. I couldn't help myself.
A friend brought me to the gym with his guest pass, and the next day I bought a membership and shoes. I was hooked.
At the time, I was teaching in the afternoons and gigging at night, so I was at the gym during the day when the routesetters were working. I watched them create the climbs I loved, moving up and down the wall on rope systems like magic. I wanted to learn. |
Before long, I started on a path that will be familiar to most setters: in exchange for stripping the walls and washing the holds, the head routesetter taught me how to set. It was volunteer. Then it was in exchange for a membership.
Next thing I knew, it was a full-time job. I was a career routesetter.
I have set in commercial climbing gyms for nearly a decade, and guest set and teach clinics around the country. I am a USA Climbing certified Level 2 Routesetter, and serve on the Climbing Association’s Routesetting and Work at Height committees.
